Number of road deaths down in 2010

Latest figures show reduction in road fatalities and in fines for road traffic offences last year.

ROAD FATALITIES FIGURES RELEASED by the gardaí show that the number of people killed on Irish roads in 2010 was down on previous years.

Last year, 212 people died in fatal collisions, compared with 238 in 2009, and 279 in 2008. October recorded the highest single-month figure in 2010, with 36 deaths.

Between January and August 2010, 23,151 fixed charge notices were sent to drivers for using a mobile phone while driving. Just over 23,400 fines for mobile phone offences were sent out in 2009.

Over 105,000 fines were sent out for speeding offences in the first eight months of last year, in comparison with 121,316 fines for the same period of 2009.

Gardaí registered 8,706 drink driving offences between January and August of last year.

AA Roadwatch Ireland’s Conor Faughnan tweeted earlier today: “Roads still kill too many of us, esp young males, but 2010 was a good year”.
