A DECISION OVER the fate of Melissa Reid will be made by a Peruvian court in the coming days.
The 22-year-old has been in jail in the country since 2013 when she was found guilty of drug smuggling along with Michaella McCollum from Tyrone in Northern Ireland.
Earlier reports had said that said that Peruvian authorities had agreed her expulsion and that she would be travelling to Scotland “very soon” to serve out the rest of her six-and-a-half year sentence.
A number of outlets – including state broadcaster the BBC – reported that the comments were made by a spokesperson for the British Embassy in Lima.
Reid’s accomplice 23-year-old McCollum was freed last month after serving two years and three months of her sentence.
The pair were both jailed for six years and eight months for attempting to smuggle 11kg of cocaine hidden in food packages inside their luggage.
McCollum is expected to have to spend a considerable amount of time in the country due to her parole conditions.
In a statement this morning, the British Foreign Office has said that it is continuing to provide assistance to Melissa Reid, and “remains in contact with her family and local authorities”.
The Scottish Prison Service said that it is not yet anticipating Reid’s arrival in their system, and that they would only be informed in circumstances where she was due to serve time in a Scottish prison.
