The US is split over whether the photos of a dead bin Laden should be released. What’s your view?
INCREASED PRESSURE is coming on the United States to release photos of a dead Osama bin Laden, following the emergence of photos taken one hour after the raid. Reuters acquired the images, which show the bodies of three men – none of whom is reported to look like bin Laden.
The US president, Barack Obama, has said releasing the photos could incite violence and lead to them being used as an Al Qaeda propaganda tool. He also believes doing so would not help to dispel conspiracy theories surrounding the raid.
But his political opponents -including Sarah Palin – and some international observers argue that releasing the photos would prove once and for all that bin Laden was, in fact, killed at the compound and would serve as a warning to others.
