A MAN HAS been charged in connection with an investigation into the death of 21-year-old Maynooth University student Qayyum Balogun, and is due to appear before the court in Dublin on Friday.

The man, aged in his 20s, was arrested by detectives investigating the fatal stabbing on Wednesday.

Gardaí confirmed that he has since been charged with assault causing harm.

He is due to appear before the Criminal Courts of Justice on Friday morning, a garda spokesperson said.

Qayyum Balogun, a computer science student originally from Nigeria who was living in Co Louth, died after being attacked on Clarendon Street, just off Grafton Street in Dublin city centre, in the early hours of Monday morning.

He had been attending a late-night performance by Nigerian artist Famous Pluto at Bewley’s Café before the incident.

Emergency services responded to reports of an assault at around 3am, and Balogun was taken to St James’s Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

A woman aged in her 20s was also arrested as part of the investigation, but was later released without charge.

Gardaí have been carrying out extensive inquiries since the attack, including examining CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses who were present when an altercation broke out before spilling onto the street.

Investigators are also awaiting forensic analysis of a knife recovered near the scene to determine whether it was used in the attack.

The investigation remains ongoing.
