A MAN HAS been arrested by gardaí investigating a serious assault that took place in Roscommon at 1am on New Year’s Day.
A man aged in his 30s was brought to Beaumont Hospital to be treated for his injuries after the assault.
Gardaí said earlier that the injured man was in critical condition.
In an update, gardaí confirmed that a man in his 40s has been arrested.
The man is being detained under Section Four of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed and an incident room has been established in Castlerea Garda Station.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the attack, which took place on Barrack Street.
A garda spokesperson said: “Any persons who were in the vicinity of Barrack Street 12:45am and 1:15am on 1st January and who may have video footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.”
“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Castlerea Garda Station on 094 962 1630, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station,” they added.
