AN AMERICAN UNIVERSITY intends to open a new million-dollar campus in west Kerry.
The Sacred Heart University (SHU), based in Connecticut, already runs an Irish studies course in Dingle, Co Kerry.
However, it now intends to expand its presence in the area.
Speaking to An Saol ó Dheas on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, the director of SHU’s Dingle Campus said that it would provide a “top class international campus”.
“At the moment students come during the year, not in summer, and probably inject in the region of €500,000 into the local economy,” Seán Pól Ó Conchúir said.
The new development would mean far more students coming over.
It’s also intended that the hall of the new campus, potentially to be located in a former Christian Brothers School, would be available for use by the local community.
The funding for the new campus, worth €730,000, has been approved, but a site has yet to be finalised.
