Sarkozy won't give in to strikers

PRESIDENT NICHOLAS SARKOZY says he refuses to bow to public pressure over plans to raise the retirement age in France from 60 to 62 over the coming eight years. Over a million people took to the streets in cities across France yesterday to protest the proposal, causing major disruptions to transport, schools, and health services. Yesterday, one of the leading union chiefs said further protests would be enacted if the government continues to refuse to negotiate the issue.
