State to seek retrial in Garda killing charge

Jury failed to reach verdict in manslaughter case last week.

A YOUNG DONEGAL man is facing a retrial on a charge of the manslaughter of a garda. A jury had failed to reach a verdict last week on the charge levelled against Jamie McGrenaghan in Letterkenny Circuit Court.

Mr McGrenaghan had been accused of the manslaughter of Garda Robbie McCallion, 29, who died of head injuries two weeks after he was knocked down by a car in Letterkenny in 2009. Jamie McGrenaghan, 19, of Gortnatraw, Kerrykeel, Co Donegal had pleaded guilty to a charge of dangerous driving causing the death of Gda McCallion on March 26, 2009 and to stealing a car on the same date.

He was found guilty last Friday of endangering the lives of Gda McCallion’s colleagues, Gda Shane Lavelle and Gda Joanne Doherty, on the same night.

The State has just decided to seek a retrial of Mr McGrenaghan on the charge of the manslaughter of Gda McCallion, RTE news reports.
