Strike threat over waste collection dispute
Possible bin collection strikes on the cards for Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown that could spread to the greater Dublin area.
TALKS HELD TODAY in an attempt to resolve a dispute at Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown council are taking place at the Labour Relations Commission, RTÉ reports.
The local authority sparked the debate with SIPTU members when it agreed to outsource the area’s waste collection service to a private operator, Panda waste management.
Council workers who are currently operating on the route would be relocated to another council area, the authority said.
SIPTU members working in waste collection in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown are threatening to strike from Thursday if the council try to go ahead with the plans. The union maintains that the council’s decision breaches both agreements reached at the Labour Relations Commission in 2008 and 2009, as well as the Croke Park deal.
SIPTU has warned that the action could spill over to affect South Dublin, Fingal and Dublin City Councils if a solution is not reached.
