Microsoft introduces Surface Pro 3 as 'the tablet that will replace your laptop'

The 12-inch tablet weighs 800g and will be released in Ireland at the end of August.

MICROSOFT HAS ANNOUNCED the latest addition to its tablet range by revealing the Surface Pro 3.

Unveiling it at a press event in New York, the 12-inch device, an increase from the Surface Pro 2′s 10.2-inch screen, is being described by Microsoft as “the tablet that will replace your laptop.”

The head and creator of the Surface project, Panos Panay, said the tablet was designed with those who end up buying both a tablet and a laptop.

“The conflict exists… you’ve been told to buy a tablet, but you know you need a laptop” he said. “Today, we’re going to focus on that, and only on that, taking that conflict away.”

Pro 3 is both thinner and lighter than previous models – 9.1mm thick and weighs 800g – and has an improved screen resolution, 2160 x 1440 resolution with a 3.2 aspect ratio.

Panay said the company had been working closely with Intel so the tablet includes the latest Core i7 processors, allowing it to multitask by running two programs or apps side-by-side as well as demoing the latest version of Photoshop, and runs Windows 8.1 Pro.

The tablet also comes with a multi-stand kickstand, designed to support a canvas mode – which places the Surface Pro 3 in a 150 degree angle – and a new Type Cover that magnetically seals itself to the screen to provide stability when placed on your lap.

The Surface Pro 3 will be made available for pre-order in the US for $799 and will be released on 20th June. Irish customers will have to wait until the end of August for it to arrive here.
