The Journal is partnering with Allianz Insurance for our Best Drives series that showcases some of the most picturesque drives across the country. For our next instalment, we’re packing up the car and heading west to touring Ireland’s best surf spots.

Heading to Ireland’s wild Atlantic coast, we explored one of the country’s most stunning surf routes from Bundoran to Strandhill.

From cliff-top beaches to charming surf villages and panoramic coastal views, this drive is a must for anyone looking to combine adventure, nature, and local culture. While you could easily spend several days exploring the area, we’ve picked one of our favourite routes for a memorable day trip along Ireland’s west coast.

Our journey begins at Tullan Strand in Bundoran. With its dramatic cliffs and wide sandy beach, it’s popular with both locals and visitors. Take a moment to breathe in the Atlantic air and watch the waves roll in — it’s the perfect starting point for a surf-inspired road trip.

From there, drive through Bundoran town, a lively village that captures the essence of Ireland’s surfing culture. From surf shops to cosy cafés, it’s worth stopping here to soak up the atmosphere before continuing your journey along the coast. Fuel up at Waves Surf cafe and get your caffeine hit before the big adventure ahead.

Next, the road takes you towards Mullaghmore, where the coastline opens up into breathtaking panoramic views. Hidden coves dot the shore, offering incredible surf opportunities. Beginners should make sure to stay with an instructor, as these are some of the best waves in the world — and safety is paramount.

A short detour brings you to Streedagh, a local favourite for windsurfing and coastal exploration. Here, you can admire talented surfers in action, explore historical landmarks, or simply enjoy a quiet moment by the sea.

Our final stop is Strandhill, a vibrant village that has everything you need for a perfect coastal finish. From Ireland’s top surf schools to great lunch spots and rejuvenating seaweed baths, Strandhill blends adventure and relaxation. Dunes, beach walks, and coastal vistas make it ideal for photos or just a leisurely stroll.

If you’re looking to try out surfing for the first time, no better place than Strandhill Surf School. Even though the locality can have rip tides and rocks it’s a beautiful place to surf. Just make sure to enjoy the water safely, with a professional instructor. Or feel free to just watch as David Mulcahy recommends.

When you leave Bundoran and get into Mullaghmore, it’s a great place to watch some of the big wave surfing. Some of the biggest waves in Europe break there.

From cliff-top panoramas at Tullan Strand to windswept dunes at Strandhill, this little road trip is both action-packed and unforgettable. Whether you’re chasing waves or soaking in the scenery, this coastal route offers a taste of Ireland at its wildest and most beautiful.
