1.#CRIME The latest garda crime statistics have been released by the Central Statistics Office. Spanning the years 2006 – 2010, they show that there has been a rise in both robberies and related crimes, and sexual offences. They also show that the detection rate for burglaries in Ireland is around 25 per cent.

2.#EDUCATION The Ombudsman for children has criticised a school for failing to apologise to a girl who it turned away after learning she was pregnant. Emily Logan’s office investigated the school after the girl and her mother filed a complaint about the matter.

3.#PRIORY HALL AIB has said it is happy to engage fully with the conciliation process being chaired by a former Supreme Court judge. Now the Priory Hall residents have called on other banks to follow suit. Resident and spokesperson Graham Usher told TheJournal.ie that AIB’s comments marked ”an extremely positive development”.

4.#JOBSWATCH Cisco has announced it will create 115 new jobs with a 26m investment at its research and development facility in Galway. Taoiseach Enda Kenny said the announcement “demonstrates the value of economic stability and Ireland’s position in Europe when it comes to our ability to attract the overseas operations of world-leading multinational companies”.

5.#TITANIC II Just weeks after the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, an Australian billionaire has announced his plans to build a replica. Clive Palmer has agreed a deal with a Chinese shipbuilding company to construct the Titanic II – and it will be based on the original ship’s design.
