An open letter opposing the plan argues that argues that removing the Triple Lock would weaken Ireland’s neutrality Alamy Stock Photo

Do you think Ireland should remove the Triple Lock?

Plans to remove the requirement for UN approval for overseas peacekeeping missions involving more than 12 Irish troops are to go before cabinet today.

THE GOVERNMENT’S PLAN to remove the Triple Lock system is due to go before cabinet today.

The Triple Lock requires overseas peacekeeping missions involving more than 12 Irish troops to receive approval from the United Nations (UN), the government and the Dáil before they can proceed.

Under the proposed changes, the requirement for UN Security Council authorisation for these peacekeeping missions would be removed.

The plan has been criticised by opposition parties and academics, with more than 400 university staff and researchers signing an open letter urging the government to reconsider.

The letter argues that removing the Triple Lock would weaken Ireland’s neutrality and undermine its commitment to the UN system.

However, Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee said that removing the system “will do nothing to alter or undermine Ireland’s policy of military neutrality”.

So today, we’re asking: Do you think Ireland should end the Triple Lock system?
