IRELAND COULD BE in store for a heatwave this week despite some areas experiencing thundery downpours. 

Temperatures look set to soar up to 26 degrees today and could reach up to 28 degrees tomorrow.

Siobhan Ryan is a meteorologist with Met Éireann and speaking to RTÉ, she said there is a “very mixed picture” for the coming days, as well as mixed weather today.

While there are temperatures in the lows 20s for many today, there are also thundery downpours across Cork, Waterford, and Wexford, and these thundery showers could make their way to the greater Dublin region this evening.

Tomorrow and Wednesday, Ryan said there will be “hot sunshine” but also more thundery downpours to come for some.

And while Ryan said it is “quite difficult to pinpoint the sporadic nature of the downpours”, she added that for most of the country, there will be a “hot” spell of weather rather than a “warm” spell.

Ryan added that temperatures could reach 28 degrees tomorrow and that over the next number of days temperatures will be around four degrees above usual.

A heatwave in Ireland is when temperatures are over 25 degrees for five days or more and Ryan said there could be a heatwave over the coming days.

“Looking at the charts, the temperature profile looks high, even into next week as well,” said Ryan.

“This is currently, at the moment, looking like a prolonged spell of very warm weather.”

Meanwhile, Ryan said it is likely to dry up after Wednesday and that it’s likely you be dry, warm and sunny in Dublin when Oasis perform at Croke Park.  

Elsewhere, the UK’s Met Office has issued a yellow heat health alert, with temperatures forecast to rise above 30 degrees in some regions between today and Wednesday.
