Website aims to answer questions about our past

The Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht will launch www.irishgenealogy.ie later today.

WAS YOUR GREAT-grandfather in the military? Did your relatives emigrate to America? How did your female ancestors live?

These are some of your questions that can be answered through a new website being launched by Minister Jimmy Deenihan later today.

IrishGenealogy.ie will offer visitors a new search portal which will include records from multiple sites, including:

  • Census 1901 and Census 1911 records.
  • Griffiths Valuations, which are the first full-scale valuations of 19th-century properties in Ireland. They were published between 1847 and 1864.
  • Tithe Applotment Records, which were compiled between 1823 and 1837 to determine the amount occupiers of agricultural holdings of more than one acre should pay in tithes to the Church of Ireland.
  • Soldiers wills and other military archives.
  • The National Library of Ireland.
  • Ellis Island records, such as passenger lists and other information held by US immigration.
  • Ireland-Australia transportation database.
  • Women in 20th-century Ireland 1922-1996, a database of about 20,000 entries on a set of records relating to central government.

The site also includes details of civil birth, marriage and death registrations, as well as church records on baptisms, weddings and burials.
