Westmeath supermarket raided

Three masked raiders entered the supermarket and forced staff into a room before forcing open a safe.

THREE RAIDERS BROKE into a supermarket in Co Westmeath last night.

The raid took place in a supermarket in Castlepollard, Co Westmeath, just before 10pm.

Gardaí said that three armed raiders entered the premises. They then forced three staff into a room at the rear of the supermarket.

When they had done this, they used a sledgehammer to force open the safe. They left with a sum of money in a 07-registered silver Saab driving towards the direction of Athboy.

The staff managed to escape and raised the alarm. No one was injured in the raid.

The three men were described as being: 6ft tall and broad; 5ft 9 and slight; and 5ft1o and of stocky build, and all wore masks.

The incident is currently under investigation by gardaí.
