A local councillor said the cars “appear to have been set alight in an act of mindless violence, just feet away from terraced houses while people slept”.

THREE CARS AND a house were damaged in a fire in Dublin city early this morning.

Gardaí were called to the scene in Palatine Square, Dublin 7 at around 5am, following reports of a car on fire.

Three cars and a house were damaged by the fire, the Garda Press Office said.

Dublin Fire Brigade also attended the scene, which was preserved for a forensic and technical examination.

No one was injured. Gardaí said no arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.

‘Mindless violence’

Éilis Ryan, a Workers’ Party councillor who lives in the Palatine Square estate, said the cars “appear to have been set alight in an act of mindless violence, just feet away from terraced houses while people slept”.

These occurrences were all too familiar in the past and cannot be allowed to re-emerge.

Ryan stated that, historically, Dublin City Council has facilitated numerous quarterly community policing forums at a neighbourhood level that facilitated dialogue with gardaí.

However, she criticised a council decision to increase the area covered by each forum, and a failure to keep forums running.

“Community policing forums – with a highly local focus – are an excellent way to facilitate interaction between gardaí and the local community. I will be calling on my fellow councillors to ensure the re-establishment of neighbourhood-based policing forums in 2017,” Ryan said.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to contact Bridewell Garda Station on 01 666 8200.
