THE TESLA 3 could be a game-changer for electric cars, and now Irish drivers can get in on the action.

The company’s founder, Elon Musk, announced last night that Ireland has been added to the order page for those who want to buy its Model 3 car.

The Model 3 is a cheaper model of its electric car aimed at the mass market. The company said it has taken orders for more than 115,000 cars in the past 24 hours.

The new car won’t be available until late next year.

The new Model 3 will have a base price of $35,000, which is half the price of the two models it currently sells (the Model S and the Model X).

Musk described it as “the final step in the master plan: a mass market, affordable car.”

Lines of people were seen queuing up to order – and place a deposit on – the Model 3.

The car fits up to five adults, and the company says it can travel at least 215 miles on a single charge.

It needs to be charged using a Tesla supercharger, of which there are due to be over 7,000 worldwide.
