GOOD MORNING

The 9 at 9 Nine things you need to know this morning…

EVERY DAY, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you need to know with your morning cup of coffee.

1. #GARDA DEATH: As around 100 gardaí investigate the shooting dead of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe outside a credit union in Louth on Friday it has emerged that the killers got away with around €4,000. RTÉ News also reports this morning that gardaí believe a criminal gang was involved in the shooting of the 42-year-old father-of-two as opposed to dissidents.

2. #DEBT DEAL: Amid a report that the European Central Bank has ruled out the prospect of Ireland swapping the Anglo Irish promissory note for a long-term bond, the Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore will tell world leaders at an EU-Latin America summit today that failure to reach a deal on the country’s debt would have a “potentially catastrophic effect” on Ireland.

3. #PARTY SUPPORT: Two polls published in today’s newspapers show that support is falling for the government parties with gains for both Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil. Labour is the biggest loser, dropping to 11 per cent in a Red C poll in the Sunday Business Post and the same in a Behaviour and Attitudes Poll in the Sunday Times. Writing for TheJournal.ie, DCU’s Eoin O’Malley assesses why Labour is suffering more than Fine Gael in coalition.

4. #ABORTION: There is strong support for legislating for the X Case on abortion according to the Behaviour and Attitudes Poll in the Sunday Times with nearly 60 per cent of those polled favouring legislation that includes the ‘risk of suicide’ provision.

5. #REFERENDUM: Ireland may need to a hold a referendum later this year that you probably won’t have heard many people talking about with Junior Minister Seán Sherlock confirming that a plebiscite will be needed in order to harmonise the registration and recognition of patents among 25 EU countries.

6. #CONVENTION: The Constitutional Convention will continue at the Grand Hotel in Malahide in north Dublin later this morning with delegates voting on whether or not to lower the voting age to 17 and reduce the presidential term of office. Results of the ballot are expected at midday.

7. #EGYPT: At least 31 people are now said to have died following violence in the Egyptian city of Port Said that followed the death sentences handed down to 21 football fans for their part in a riot last year. The unrest comes amid widespread dissatisfaction with the fledgling presidency of Mohamed Morsi and some talk that the country is in the midst of a second revolution in two years.

8. #HOLOCAUST: It is 68 years since the the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp was liberated by allied troops with events being held across the world to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

9. #DOWRY: Remember the man who offered €47 million to any man who could woo and marry his lesbian daughter? The offer still stands with Hong Kong billonaire Cecil Chao telling the Financial Times that although his daughter Gigi “can choose whatever she wants” the offer of a multi-million euro dowry remains on the table.
