GOOD MORNING

The 9 at 9 Nine things you need to know with your morning cup of coffee…

EVERY DAY, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you need to know with your morning cup of coffee.

1. #BAILIEBOROUGH: A man involved in a nine-hour stand off in the Cavan town of Bailieborough on Thursday night is being held in hospital as gardaí wait to question him over the death of mother-of-four Patricia Kierans.

2. #AUSTRALIA: The conservative opposition leader Tony Abbott is expected to become Australia’s next prime minister, ousting the Labor incumbent Kevin Rudd as millions go to the polls in the country where it is compulsory for everyone over 18 to cast their vote.

3. #ALAN RYAN: A huge security operation will be in place in north Dublin today as a ceremony to commemorate the death of Real IRA member Alan Ryan just over a year ago takes place. A local councillor said that gardaí must be sensitive and “allow the family to grieve for their child”.

4. #SUICIDE: Minister of State for Mental Health Kathleen Lynch does not agree that suicides in Ireland have gotten “out of hand” but she has underlined the importance of getting more information to tackle “what is a very serious problem in the country”.

5. #HIQA: Almost 400 children are on waiting lists for child services in Waterford according to a HIQA report. The health watchdog’s latest inspection of the HSE’s Child Protection and Welfare Service in the county has found a continuing problem with waiting lists.

6. #PRIORY HALL: The partner of a former Priory Hall resident Fiachra Daly, who too his own life, has said she hopes his death will not be in vain. Stephanie Meehan gave an emotional interview to Ryan Tubridy on the Late Late Show last night. But residents have been “quite panicked” by the responses of bankers to their plight this week.

7. #SYRIA: US Secretary of State John Kerry is to meet EU ministers in Latvia and Paris today to rally support for military strikes against Syria, after the G20 summit failed to resolve bitter international divisions on the issue.

8. #COYBIG: The future of Giovanni Trapattoni as Ireland boss hangs in the balance this morning after last night’s World Cup qualifying defeat to Sweden at the Aviva Stadium. The Boys in Green now need a miracle to qualify for Brazil next year but “anything can happen” according to the Italian.

9. #BABY, YOU’RE A RICH MAN? One of the two winning tickets in last night’s Euromillions draw was sold in Ireland. That means one lucky person in the country could be over €12 million richer. Was it you?
