Man (40s) charged after man (70s) dies following assault at property in Co Waterford

Shortly after 6pm yesterday, gardaí and emergency services responded to an incident that occurred outside a home in Cappagh, Dungarvan.

A MAN HAS been charged after a man in his 70s was fatally assaulted in Co Waterford yesterday evening.

Shortly after 6pm yesterday, gardaí and emergency services responded to an incident that occurred outside a home in Cappagh, Dungarvan, Co Waterford.

A man in his 70s was discovered with serious injuries and was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene.

He has been named locally as John Cashman, who was well known in the wider area for his work as a farmer.

His remains have been removed from the scene to the Mortuary in University Hospital Waterford, where a post mortem will take place in due course.

A man in his 40s was arrested at the scene and has since been charged.

He is due to appear before Carrick-on-Suir District Court tomorrow, Wednesday 15 April at 10:30am.

The scene and domestic residence have been preserved for forensic examination and the Coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist have been notified.

A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been established at Dungarvan Garda Station.

A spokesperson said gardaí are investigating all of the circumstances of the fatal assault and that investigations are ongoing.

Local TD Conor McGuinness paid tribute to the deceased, as he described how the incident had left the community shocked.

“Terrible news from Cappagh overnight and this morning,” McGuinness said.

“People in this rural community and beyond have been left shocked and saddened. Condolences to the family of the deceased.”
