Scarlett Johansson returns to the role of the titular character – aka Natasha Romanoff – for the action-packed movie as the Black Widow is forced to confront the darker parts of her life when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises.

Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to take her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a KGB-assassin and the broken relationships she left behind her long before she became an Avenger.

Taking place after the events of Captain America: Civil War (2016) and before Avengers: Endgame (2019), Black Widow is the first film in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The film sees the introduction of Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, a spy and assassin who was trained at the Red Room by the same mentors as Natasha. Directed by Cate Shortland and produced by Kevin Feige, other characters include David Harbour as The Red Guardian, and Rachel Weisz as Melina.

Following Natasha’s death in Endgame, this will be Johansson’s last time reprising the role of Black Widow. “I think it’s bittersweet,” she said recently in an interview on Good Morning America.

“I’ve had an incredible decade working with my Marvel family. I’m going to miss not seeing them every 18 months or two years, like those kind of milestones I always really look forward to.”

The actor first appeared as Black Widow in Iron Man 2 (2010), and says it’s “great” to end with a film dedicated to the backstory of the character.

“I feel really proud of this film and I think it’s great to go out on a high note. This movie is so different from any other Marvel film that we’ve done so far.”

See Black Widow in cinemas nationwide now, or watch it on Disney+ with Premier Access. Additional fee required. Discover the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe on Disney+, with monthly subscriptions from just €8.99.
