SOME DUBLIN BUSINESSES saw their income boosted by as much as 20 per cent over the weekend due to the county’s All-Ireland Senior Football Championship success at Croke Park on Sunday.

Dublin Chamber of Commerce says the confidence associated with a feel good win like the Dubs’ success at Croker will in some cases encourage people to spend that bit more when they are out and about in the capital.

Whilst unable to put a definitive figure on how much the city was boosted by the game at the weekend, Patrick King from Dublin Chamber of Commerce said the victory for Pat Gilroy’s men was an important confidence boost:

“The confidence associated with something like this it is an important element, some people who have money and who will wait for events like this will spend it. That’s the trend we’ve seen over the last few years.

“It’s hard to say how many people spent an additional amount to their normal spend but they do generally respond to big events and this can usually mean a 10 to 20 per cent increase for certain businesses.”

King said overall it had been a positive development for the city economically but added that there would be no long-term benefit from the All-Ireland success of Dublin’s footballers.

“This is more maybe just a turning point, and a big confidence boost to the city,” he added.
