A SERIES OF seizures of over the last few days have yielded cannabis with a street value of around €120,000 and cigarettes and tobacco with a retail value of over €23,000.

The largest  seizure was made in Co. Longford this morning. Officers from the Revenue’s Customs Service and gardaí seized 6 kilos of herbal cannabis following the search of a house in Leglan.

It’s believed the drugs originated in Canada. A 23-year-old male was arrested and taken for further questioning.

Dublin

Two tobacco seizures took place in the capital. On Wednesday, customs officers at the airport seized 20,000 ‘L&N’ cigarettes with a retail value of €9,500 and a potential tax loss to the exchequer of €8,302 when they stopped and searched two Romanian women in their twenties who had arrived on a flight from Chisnau, Moldova.

They were arrested and appeared at the Criminal Courts of Justice yesterday, where Judge Patricia McNamara remanded them in custody to appear again next Thursday.

Six kilos of illegal tobacco — with an estimated retail value of €2,758 and potential loss to the exchequer of €2,356 — were seized at Dublin Port last night. An Irish man in his thirties is being questioned and a file on the case is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Stop and search

Finally, customs officers operating under court warrant searched two private homes in the Cranmore and Knappaghmore areas of Sligo Town last night, and seized 28 kilos of unstamped ‘Amber Leaf’, ‘Drum’ & ‘Golden Virginia’ tobacco (estimated retail value €11,200).

A vehicle was also stopped and searched, and a quantity of cash — which officers suspect was the proceeds from the sale of illegal tobacco — was seized.

Two Irish women in their thirties were questioned, and files are being prepared for the DPP with a view to prosecution.
