We all partied

It's not over yet but these candidates have already been popping the champagne

There were tears, there was laughter and we imagine some weary heads hitting pillows last night.

WE’VE PASSED THE halfway mark now with local election seats and so far 58 electoral areas now full.

For some candidates, the wait continues after a long day yesterday and by the looks of it, many of them have a bit of time on their hands before they know whether they’re in or out.

As the results started to flood in yesterday, the victors celebrated in the traditional ways; being hoisted into the air by friends and family members or having a bit of a humble cry about it, and then, we imagine, going home for some much-needed sleep after the slog of the campaign.

When the results of the Dublin-West by-election came in yesterday, the Socialist Party’s Ruth Coppinger and her supporters were literally popping the champagne:

Hugh O'Connell Hugh O'Connell

A simple fist-pump sufficed for Fine Gael’s Vicki Casserly who was elected in Lucan:

Kenny Egan was keeping it real with Minister Frances Fitzgerald:

Sinn Féin’s Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire, one of the ‘Irish Election Rides’, was feeling light on his feet:

As was Fianna Fáil candidate Kieran O’Hanlon in Limerick:

Also in Limerick, AAA’s Cian Prendiville was clearly happy with himself but didn’t miss a chance to remind us all he’s against austerity:

There were tears from Mary Hanafin, whose seat was confirmed well before her party favourite candidate in Blackrock, Kate Feeney…

…and a look of pure joy on the face of her party colleague Aindreas Moynihan in Cork:

We’d like to send a special shout-out to this little hero in Dublin for his perfect photo-bombing form. Well played.

For now, the counting continues and we’ve got all the latest news on election results, in our liveblog. If you’re wondering who’s been elected in your area, we’ve got a list right here.
