DAIRY FARMING HAS been an integral part of Irish life for the last 6,000 years.
There are 17,500 family-run dairy farms in Ireland, the industry accounts for 60,000 jobs and dairy exports contribute five billion euros a year to Ireland Inc. The dairy sector is a cornerstone of our economy and satisfies demand for dairy produce in more than 130 countries across the world.
Unfortunately. when discussing sustainability and the global climate challenge, it is easy to overlook what dairy gives back to our economy and our society. It is equally easy to dismiss the efforts made by Irish dairy to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and minimise its impact on the environment. Currently, the industry is tasked with reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2030 and is working hard to achieve its target by adopting and implementing new farming methods and actively developing innovative homegrown answers to the challenge.
Uncertainties around dairy sustainability are not the only misconceptions about Irish dairy farming, and indeed dairy all over the world. Take the quiz from the National Dairy Council below to test your knowledge of Ireland’s dairy industry.
