Diesel laudering plant found in Co Louth
The operation was disguising cheap industrial diesel as road fuel – with a cost of up to €4.5 million to the exchequer.
A DIESEL LAUNDERING plant has been uncovered by customs officers in Co Louth, which experts believe was putting a strain of €4.5 million on the exchequer.
A total of 25,000 litres of diesel was recovered and one man in his twenties arrested as a result of the raid, reports RTÉ.
Customs officers also uncovered 19,000 litres of highly toxic wash, which is used to strip dye from cheap industrial diesel so it can then be passed on and sold as road fuel. The acids used in this wash can cause serious damage to engines.
The operation took place in a large shed at a location just metres from the border. It is believed that the laundering had been going on 24 hours a day.
One man is due to appear before the District Court next month in connection with the raid.
