Dublin youth conference set to hear from the stars of politics, sports and business

Speakers at the One Young World Dublin 2014 summit will include Kofi Annan, Dame Ellen MacArthur and creator of Wikipedia Jimmy Wales.

TODAY SEES THE start of the One Young World Dublin 2014 youth event in the nation’s capital.

The event is the biggest of its kind to ever be held in Europe and will run from today until Friday. The event is sponsored by Dublin City Council and will feature a number of high profile speakers.

The main theme of the conference is leadership and will see youth delegates hearing from a number of those established in the field of sports, politics, journalism and business.

Speakers

Headlining the event will be former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Also speaking will be Bob Geldof, former President Mary Robinson, Fr Peter McVerry, sailor Dame Ellen Macarthur, Wimbledon winner Boris Becker and founder of Wikipedia Jimmy Wales among others.

The conference will also see Bob Geldof’s space shuttle put on displace outside of outside of the Convention Centre in the Dublin Docklands where the event is being held.

The event will be attended by 1400 young leaders from 190 countries around the world. Topics that will be focused on during the conference will include human rights, education, global business, leadership and governance, and sustainable development.

Lord Mayor 

Speaking about the event, the Lord Mayor of Dublin Christy Burke said:

It is important that as this event is in Dublin, that Dublin enables leaders in social change to take part… leadership is about making a difference in people’s lives.  It is not about what money you earn, or the power you hold but rather what justice and fair play you create for the most vulnerable and marginalised in our cities.
