The Evening Fix...now with added reasons to drink tea

The things we learned, loved and shared today…

HERE ARE THE things you need to know as we round off the day in three easy steps.

THINGS WE LEARNED

#DROUGHT OVER: It has been 20 long years since a Donegal man lifted the Sam Maguire at Croke Park but that feat was achieved by Michael Murphy today after his side beat Mayo by a scoreline of 2-11 to 0-13 in the All-Ireland Football Final.

#MISSING: A massive search is underway in Melbourne, Australia for Irish woman Jill Meagher who failed to return home from a night out in a local bar on Friday.

#QUINN SUPPORT: A group set up to support the family of Seán Quinn has received pledges worth up to €2 million from rich business people who want to help with legal fees.

#ROADS: A 19-year-old man has died in a road crash in Wexford in the early hours of this morning. He was the driver of one of two cars involved.

#ALLOWANCES: John McGuinness, the chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee, has told RTÉ that he aims to cut some public sector allowances before December’s budget. The stated intention comes as his committee works to speed up its hearings into the payments following the Government’s failure to meet its €75 million savings target.

#PRESIDENTIAL WORDS: President Michael D Higgins told us why his favourite speech is Robert Kennedy’s 1968 campaign trail address to a crowd in Indianapolis on hearing of the death of Martin Luther King.

THINGS WE LOVED

  • Two acts of magnificent generosity that came to light today – one a small gesture that touched the life of one man, another a greater gift that will help the lives of many. A Westport local is still waiting for someone to pay it forward after he found a prized ticket for today’s match and handed it to Gardaí who reunited it with the rightful owner. And then Barretstown, the Kildare-based camp for seriously ill children, revealed that a wealthy fan of founder and Hollywood legend Paul Newman included a €7 million bequest to the charity in his will.
  • Obviously we love anything that gives us new reasons to drink even more tea – and not just because something bad has happened. Barry’s or Lyon’s anyone?
  • Is there anything better than seeing a bunch of grown men running around a pitch hugging and kissing each other and then placing huge chunks of metal on their head? No, didn’t think so.

THINGS WE SHARED

  • Buzzfeed’s “Who is your most inexplicable celebrity crush?” started an office conversation here at TheJournal.ie HQ during which Lionel Richie, Gordon Ramsey and George Michael were all mentioned. We’ve told you ours, now it’s your turn to share. To the comments section.
  • The sad news that the a newborn panda has died in the US. The Washington DC zoo only announced the birth of the “little giant panda cub” last week, releasing this footage of its latest addition.
