THREE POLICEMEN HAVE been arrested in India for raping a woman inside a Mumbai police station.
The incident happened on 3 April but the woman involved has only come forward to police this week.
It is being reported by Mumbai newspaper Mid Day that the woman involved, who is a model, fled the city on the night of the attack for fear of repercussion.
She alerted Police Commisioner Rakesh Maria of the attack earlier this week via text message and this has led to today’s arrests.
According to Indian news source DNA, the woman had been arrested after visiting a 5-star Mumbai hotel to meet a friend. She was approached by three police officers in civilian clothing who detained her on the grounds that she was soliciting clients for prostitution.
She was taken to the police station by the three men in a private car where the police extorted around €7,360 from her before carrying out the sexual assault.
Besides the policemen arrested three others are wanted in connection with the incident, one of whom is a woman.
Speaking about the assault, Joint Commissioner of Police, Deven Bharti, said:
Such black sheep will not be tolerated in the force. We will ensure that each one of them gets the harshest punishment.
