Ireland women's double sculls win heat at World Rowing Championships

IRISH WOMEN’S DOUBLE sculls duo Zoe Hyde and Mags Cremen have won their heat at the World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam.

Hyde and Cremens dominated their heat to progress with a time of 7:46.73. Ukraine and China finished second and third respectively, the former some way off their Irish counterparts in 7:51.07 in a five-way race.

Lithuania (7:38.67), Great Britain (7:40.42) and Netherlands (7:43.33) won the other heats, with Hyde and Cremens qualifying for the semi-finals as the seventh-fastest crew overall.

Their semi-final is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, with the top three advancing to Friday’s A final and the others contesting the B final. 

Meanwhile, the Women’s Pair of Natalie Long and Imogen Magner squeezed into their semi-final after finishing fourth in their heat. 

Long and Magner clocked 8:03.42 to place fourth of six, with Romania winning in 7:42.46 and Lithuania (7:50.43) and Italy (7:56.94) finishing second and third respectively. Their next round is scheduled for Friday afternoon. 

And the Men’s Pair of Ross Corrigan and Nathan Timoney were off the pace in their heat, finishing fourth of four in 7:21.12, and contesting the C final on Friday. 

The action in Amsterdam continues through the week.
