Julian Assange questioned in Sweden
Wikileaks founder meets investigators over molestation accusations.
WIKILEAKS FOUNDER JULIAN ASSANGE was questioned yesterday evening by Swedish police investigating allegations of molestation against him.
Assange’s lawyer said that Assange told police he was “totally innocent” and was cooperating fully with police.
He says he is hopeful the case will be dropped.
Swedish prosecutors are reconsidering the rape allegation made against Assange, as they are obliged to do under Swedish law.
Earlier this month, authorities issued an arrest warrant for Assange on suspicion of rape, but withdrew it less than 24 hours later, citing lack of evidence.
The sexual molestation accusations were made in separate complaints by two women in Sweden. Molestation is not a crime under Swedish law, but could result in a fine or a year’s imprisonment.
Assange’s supporters claim that the accusations are part of a wider bid to discredit the Wikileaks chief, after his website released thousands of classified US documents.
