LIGHTNING STRIKES FROM monsoon storms in India this week have killed at least 33 people and injured dozens, officials said.
The deaths occurred in Bihar, in eastern India, during storms on Wednesday and Thursday, the local disaster management department statement said. The victims mostly farmers and labourers working in the open.
India’s eastern region, including Bihar, is prone to annual floods that kill dozens and displace hundreds of thousands of people during peak monsoon season. At least 243 died by lightning in 2024 and 275 the year earlier, according to the state government.
The local government announced compensation of 4 million rupees (€39,900) to the families of those killed by lightning.
More heavy rain and lightning are forecast for parts of the state today. The local disaster management minister, speaking to the AFP news agency, said supports have been established in vulnerable districts and are offering support and advice.
