A MAN WHO died after being trapped under a bus in Ballinalee in County Longford has been described as a great community man at his funeral.

Shane Carrigy (45) died after he became trapped under a bus he was working on at the family business Carrigy Coaches in Ballinalee in County Longford on Thursday, 27 November at around 11:50am.

Separately, his father Michael passed away on Saturday.

Speaking at his funeral mass at a packed Holy Trinity Church in Ballinalee, where gifts brought to the altar showcasing his love for music and sport, Parish Priest Fr Thomas Murray described him as a great community man.

“Shane spent his life carrying people,” he said.

“He carried children to national school, and secondary school children to matches: hurling, football, soccer, basketball.”

“Yesterday I had a text from Australia from a guy who was a brilliant Gaelic player and also an absolute tearaway. Shane would chat to him on the way to matches and formed a bond and friendship with him.

“He said Shane always watched out for the people on the margins and subtly might influence them away from the darkness towards the light.”

Shane is survived by his wife Anne, children Kayla and Ryan, sister Michelle and brothers Raymond, Michael and Aiden.

His funeral mass was followed by burial in St. Emer’s Cemetery, Ballinalee.

The Health and Safety Authority confirmed it has launched an investigation into the incident.

A spokesperson for the HSA said: “The HSA is aware of the fatal incident and has launched an investigation. As such, no further information is available at this time.”
