Man arrested after allegedly setting fire to 100 cars

It is reported that the young, unemployed man alleged to have lit the fires was motivated by “social envy”.

A MAN WHO is suspected of setting fire to more than 100 cars over three nights in Berlin has been arrested.

Reuters reports that police arrested the man yesterday.

He is reported to be 27 years of age and unemployed and in debt.

The arson attacks took place in August and were said to have outraged German people and drawn condemnation from German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Police were offering a €5,000 reward to anyone who had information that led to the perpetrator’s arrest and more than 100 officers were involved in searching for the arsonist.

At the time, it was suspected that the attacks were carried out by far-left activists. The majority of the cars torched were luxury cars.

Police claim that the alleged arsonist was motivated by social envy rather than politics, and that slow-burning barbecue fire lighters were used in a number of the arson attacks.
