In the latest incident, a 19-year-old died after his car hit a wall near Ballinrobe in Mayo at around 10.30pm last night.

It happened on the N84 at Carrowmore. The young man died at the scene and his body was later taken to Mayo General Hospital for a post-mortem.

A passenger in his late teens was also taken to Mayo General. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Last night, a 70-year-old man died after the SUV he was driving crashed with a jeep last night. It happened on the N15 at Drumcroil, Ballintra at around 10.30pm.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to Sligo General Hospital.

The three other passengers in the SUV – one male and two female – were taken to Sligo General Hospital with injuries described as serious but not life-threatening.

The driver and passenger of the second vehicle, a jeep, were also treated at the same hospital for injuries described as minor.

It was the second fatal crash in the county in the space of 24 hours after a 19-year-old man died early yesterday.

The teenager was a passenger in a car that crashed at Burnfoot at around 4:30am.

Another passenger, a 19-year-old girl, is in a serious condition at Letterkenny General Hospital.

The driver, also aged 19, was taken to hospital but is not seriously injured.

On Saturday afternoon a 41-year-old motorcyclist was fatally injured when his bike collided with a car at Ballinrush, Kilworth, Co Cork.

The occupants of the car weren’t injured.

The Co Down crash happened at around 5.30pm yesterday on the A1 between Banbridge and Dromor – the main route between Belfast and Dublin.

Three young men lost their lives.

Local SDLP MLA Dolores Kelly said weather conditions in the area led to “atrocious driving conditions”.
