'Style, swagger and a warm heart': Tributes paid after death of Stone Roses bassist Mani
He played on both the Stone Roses albums and for Primal Scream.

TRIBUTES HAVE BEEN paid to Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield, best known as the bassist in the Stone Roses and Primal Scream, after his death aged 63.
His brother announced his death on social media yesterday afternoon.
His death comes just days after he announced an intimate in-conversation tour for 2026/27 around the UK.
Mani left school at 16 to join the Stone Roses and played on both the cult band’s albums. Fronted by singer Ian Brown, the Stone Roses were part of the 1990s ‘Madchester’ scene.
They had a distinctive guitar sound and received widespread critical acclaim. After several lineup changes and tension between the band and their label they formally disbanded in 1996.
The Stone Roses’s X account described Mani as “the greatest bass player and friend we could have ever wished for”.
Mani would then go on to join Primal Scream and the band’s bassist Simone Butler wrote in a message on Instagram that he was “truly in shock”.
She added: “The moment you met Mani you loved him. The most brilliant and wickedly sharp sense of humour and the biggest heart and generosity.
“My heart is breaking for his boys, family and loved ones. Was meant to see him tomorrow in Manchester.
“A terrible and sad loss. An amazing person, so so loved by everyone all over the world, just heartbreaking.”
The roses later reunited in 2011 for a world tour and released two singles. They broke up once again in 2017.
Though he was born in Manchester, the bassist’s mother coming from Athy, Co Kildare.
He was honoured with a Made of Athy plaque in 2019.
Though he was an avid Manchester United supporter, his Irish lineage meant that he was brought up to support the Republic’s national team.

His wife Imelda passed away from cancer in November 2023. They have two sons.
Liam Gallagher said he was in “total shock” and “absolutely devestated” after hearing of Mani’s death and described him as a “hero”.

Richard Ashcroft meanwhile said Mani was “one of the loveliest positive musicians to spend time”.
He added that Mani was a “key element to the band that inspired me to believe I could do this music thing, he had the style, the swagger and the sound but most importantly a warm heart”.
