3 Midweek Longreads: There's no way I'm having kids - so what?

Longreads to savour or save.

IF YOU WANT a juicy longread to sink your teeth into, you’ve come to the right place.

Here are three to save for a moment of peace, or devour straight away.

1. Cops and robbers

These cops were charged with busting smugglers and confiscating drugs… but soon they got involved in the  game too. From the wrong side.

(Texas Monthly, 49 mins)

He liked the uniform, the rush of kicking down a door with a search warrant, a traffic stop to nab someone up to no good. It was why he’d worked as a detention officer and then entered the sheriff’s academy. It was why he’d worked his way up, impressing the sheriff enough to get promoted to one of the most exclusive narcotics forces on the border: the Panama Unit.

2. Films and philosophy

Films like Memento, Ida and It’s A Wonderful Life aren’t just great movies, they also raise big philosophical questions, like what makes a life worth living? Thoughtful.

(The Guardian, 18 mins)

Many films explore the question, “What makes a human life good?”Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life, everybody’s favourite schmaltzy Christmas classic, takes on the task directly, with both predictable and unexpected results.

3. No kids, no way

These authors all say there is no way they’re having kids. And they feel so strongly, they wrote a book about it.

(NY Times, 13 mins)

People’s reasons for not reproducing remain as varied as ever, encompassing the personal, political, financial, environmental or the anti-narcissistic, as in the case of John Warner, the author of the novel “The Funny Man,” who self-deprecatingly wrote in an email, “I’m not convinced my genes are anything to wish on anyone.”
