GOOD MORNING. Here’s all the news to know as you start your day.

1. Hip surgeries

A review of the individual cases of children who may have undergone unnecessary hip surgeries will not take place until January, the HSE has confirmed.

It comes after a clinical audit of surgeries for dysplasia of the hips in children found that a lower threshold for operations was used at CHI Temple Street hospital and the National Orthopaedic Hospital Cappagh (NOHC) than the threshold used at CHI Crumlin.

2. Presidential election

Fine Gael MEP Seán Kelly and former TD Heather Humphreys both confirmed yesterday that they would seek the party’s nomination to contest the presidential election.

Humphreys already has a commanding lead over Kelly.

3. Drones

A long-promised national policy framework to deal with the regulation of commercial drone deliveries in Ireland is due to be published today.

The plan, which was initially promised in 2023, seeks to balance government policy of developing a strong commercial drone sector in the country, alongside community concerns around privacy and noise.

4. Fire

A large fire that blazed for several hours yesterday at George’s Dock in Dublin was brought under control late last night.

5. Ukraine

US President Donald Trump has said he would not send US troops to enforce a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia.

However, he left open the possibility of providing air support, saying: “We’re willing to help them with things, especially, probably, if you talk about by air.”

6. Gaza

Hamas has accepted the terms of a new truce proposal constructed through mediation in Qatar but Israel has not yet set out its position.

Qatar expressed guarded optimism, noting the latest proposal was “almost identical” to an earlier version agreed to by Israel.

7. Kneecap

Kneecap’s Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh returns to court in London today when a judge is set to hear legal argument that will decide if a full trial is likely to go ahead.

As was the case when Ó hAnnaidh last appeared before Westminster Magistrates’ Court in June, protests are expected outside the court building and are being organised by a number of pro-Palestine groups.

8. Rose of Tralee

The Laois Rose won the Rose of Tralee, bringing to a close the festival’s 65th year.

Winner Katelyn Cummins, age 20, was presented with her sash by the 2024 Rose of Tralee Kelly O’Grady.
