ONE OF TV show Neighbours’ best known actresses has died at the age of 92.
Vivean Gray played the spiky Mrs Mangel in the Melbourne-based soap between 1986-1988. The British-born actress was also known for her role as Mrs Jessup in another Australian TV show, The Sullivans.
Gray moved to Australia in 1953 to pursue acting and her career there also included roles on a number of other TV shows and films.
Neighbours’ executive producer Jason Herbison described her as “a true soap legend”.
“Mrs Mangel was the ultimate busybody, remembered for her conservatism and her caustic wit,” he said in a statement to ABC News.
“She was a true soap legend and we thank her for all the wonderful memories.”
Writing in The Guardian, her on-screen son Mark Little described working alongside her:
I will always remember Vivean’s grace under pressure, her generosity as a person and as an actor, her sense of the absurd, her sense of humour and her unnerving work ethic in the face of a huge workload. She was a favourite and was given a lot to say.
