National Heritage Week: What’s on today?

A record 1,550 events will take place over the next week to celebrate Ireland’s national heritage.

MORE THAN 1,550 heritage events have taken place across the country over the last few days with a view to protect and enhance the richness, quality and diversity of Ireland’s national heritage.

National Heritage Week is providing an exciting look at Irish culture, and will see everything from archaeology, traditional skills, and historical re-enactments explored – and heritage properties not usually open to the public unlocked.

More than 600,000 people are expected to take part in the festival and most of the events are free. A list of events can be checked by location and category through the free iPhone / Android Heritage Week Event App or through heritageweek.ie.

Sligo – Open Day at the Schoolhouse

26 August, 10:00 – 16:00 (free)

Take part in this self-guided tour of this restored 19th c. schoolhouse, which is now available as holiday accommodation. Visitors have the opportunity to view the conservation work of the Irish Landmark Trust. Information leaflets will be available. Everyone is welcome. The Schoolhouse, Annaghmore, Collooney.

Kerry – Ecotrek Historical Cliff Path Walk

26 August 15:00 – 16:00 (free)

This historical walk will commence at the famous Ballybunion Castle and follow the route along the cliffs of the famous O’Connor and his many battles. Walkers will be led by historian Danny Houlihan, author of ‘Ballybunion: An Illustrated History’ and founder of Ecotrek Ballybunion. Danny will take everyone back through the pages of history in the area. A tour not to be missed! Suitable footwear is advised. The tour will commence on 26th Sunday at 3:00pm sharp. Ballybunion Historical Coastal Walk, Castle Green, Ballybunion.

Waterford – Strongbow & Aoife Wedding Pageant

26 August, 15:00 – 17:00 (free)
A re-enactment, on the 842nd anniversary, of the wedding of Strongbow and Aoife which followed the capture of Waterford by the Normans. “Amid the smoking ruins of the city” the pair were wed. Witness the marriage that changed the course of Irish history! Cathedral Square, Waterford City.
