The 23-year-old – who played the Electric Picnic festival in Laois on Saturday – took to Twitter to break the news which he described as “one of the highlights of my career”.
Speaking to Nick Grimshaw on BBC Radio 1, he said: “I’m so relieved to actually talk about this, this has been a top secret mission of my own.
I got called into the office with Barbara Broccoli and Sam Mendes and they gave me the script, I read the script… they said ‘have a go at the song’.
He said it only took himself and Jimmy Napes 20 minutes to write the song ‘Writing’s On The Wall’, which was was recorded back in January.
This is the first James Bond theme song to be recorded by a British male solo artist since 1965.
