Met Eireann's morning rainfall radar is unusually green. Met Eireann
MINUS ELEVEN

Spring has arrived but with nighttime temperatures of -11°C

A temperature of ground -11°C was noted at Finner in Donegal overnight, that’s a record for this time of year.

SPRING IS FINALLY in the air, after weeks of snow, sleet, ice, rain and freezing cold weather.

Met Éireann forecasts the day to stay dry across most of the country again with sunny skies generally, but some cloud will feed into the east later with a risk of a shower or two. Highest temperatures will range from 6 to 10°C.

However, a temperature of ground -11°C was noted at Finner in Donegal overnight. That’s a record for this time of year, but Deirdre Lowe, meteorologist explained to TheJournal.ie that “skies were clear overnight, which resulted in a drop and it will be similar again tonight”.

Air temperatures in Finner dropped to -5.6°C overnight, also a record.

The change in climate means it is warmest in the west by day but also coldest in the west by night, with ground temperatures in the area ranging from between -5 to -11 degrees at the moment.

It’s bad news for farmers, who are willing grass and crops to grow, however, with even higher temperatures forecast for the weekend, an average of 9°C, and rain also expected, Lowe says conditions for farmers will get better.
