IF YOU ARE one of the few people who still haven’t seen the award-winning ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’, come out from under that rock and head over to Disney+ where it is now available in the comfort of your own home.
The Martin McDonagh film starring two of our biggest Hollywood actors, Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, is the must-see movie of this award season. Having already picked up Golden Globes for Best Picture and Best Actor in the Musical/Comedy category as well as Best Screenplay, ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ has been nominated for the following categories at the Academy Awards:
Best Director – Martin McDonagh
Best Film
Best Actor – Colin Farrell
Best Supporting Actor – Brendan Gleeson
Best Supporting Actor – Barry Keoghan
Best Supporting Actress – Kerry Condon
Film Editing – Mikkel EG Nielsen
Best Original Score
Original Screenplay – Martin McDonagh
The Banshees of Inisherin has also received ten nominations for the BAFTAs, including Best Picture.
Set on a remote island on the west coast of Ireland, ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ tells the captivating and engrossing story of a damaged relationship between two men. The black comedy shows twists and turns of their descent into a catastrophic falling out, observed by a bemused village, provides a mixture of bellyaching laughter and truly gut wrenching moments.
Colm (Brendan Gleeson) has decided to end his long-term friendship with Padraic (Colin Farrell). Completely blindsided by the falling out, Padraic is left to come to terms with the abrupt finish of his friendship with the help of his sister Siobhan (Kerry Condon) and the local policeman’s son Dominic (Barry Keoghan).
Numerous attempts are made by Padraic to get back on speaking terms with Colm, however, Colm refuses any and all attempts of reconciliation, and issues Padraic a sinister ultimatum, marking the termination of the friendship. Things begin to spiral out of control shortly afterwards, with both sides suffering as a result.
Filming took place in the autumn of 2021 on Inishmore and Achill Island, and both islands feature heavily throughout the film. Notable landmarks include Keem Bay, Purteen Harbour, and St. Thomas’s Church in Dugort.
This marks the second collaboration between McDonagh, Farrell, and Gleeson after ’In Bruges’, and ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ is as dark and hilarious as the 2008 black comedy. McDonagh’s catalogue of work is filled with highly-acclaimed films such as ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ and ‘Seven Psychopaths’, and his latest effort ranks very highly among them.
As the film looks set to make a big splash at both the Oscars and the BAFTAs, now is a fantastic time to check out ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ on Disney+
