• Fine Gael and Labour will form the next government, after both parties this evening gave comprehensive backing to the draft Programme for Government that they had earlier agreed on. Details of who will hold what ministerial portfolio are likely to emerge when the 31st Dail sits for the first time on Wednesday.
• The DSPCA have said it was a “miracle” that no one was killed after shots were fired at Smithfield horse fair in Dublin this morning. Two people were injured in the incident.
• Two people have died on our roads this weekend. A man in his thirties was killed when his car struck a wall in Mayo last night. Meanwhile one man died and four others were injured after a two car collision in Cavan in the early hours of Sunday morning.
• Disgraced Cork 96fm DJ Neil Prendeville will meet with stations bosses this week in a bid to salvage his job with the station. The Garda investigation has been completed and the DPP will not be pressing charges after his now infamous ‘lewd act’ aboard an airplane last October.
• A town in Spain has found an interesting way of boosting economic growth. Mugardos has reintroduced the old Spanish currency – the peseta – bidding to get the local economy moving. And so far it seems to have been a success among the locals.
• Fianna Fáil are thought to be considering selling off Bertie Ahern’s infamous St Luke’s headquarters in Dublin with a party source telling one Sunday newspaper that the house in Drumcondra had come to “symbolise all that is wrong” with the party in Dublin.
• One to watch in the week ahead. Former French president Jacques Chirac will stand trial for corruption in Paris. It starts tomorrow.
• Ireland’s cricketers could not match their heroic performance against England last week as they fell to defeat to India in Bangalore today. We followed the action as the day’s play progressed. Check out how it unfolded.
