The Evening Fix… now with added sky hobbits

Here’s all the things we learned, loved and shared today.

HERE ARE THE things you need to know as we round off the day in three easy steps.

THINGS WE LEARNED:

#CATHERINE GOWING: Police in North Wales have confirmed that human remains found in a shallow pool in a field in Sealand, in Flintshire, on Wednesday have been identified as those of missing vet Catherine Gowing. A further set of remains found on the banks of the River Dee by an off-duty police officer on Friday have yet to be formally identified.

#ENNISKILLEN: Police in Northern Ireland have launched an investigation into the Remembrance Day bombing in Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh, by the IRA, it has been revealed. Eleven people died and 63 more were injured when the IRA set off a bomb in the town in November of 1987.

#ISRAEL PALESTINE: Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has shattered a once-inviolable taboo by publicly suggesting that his people may have to relinquish claims to their ancestral homes in Israel. His comments on the refugee issue, made in an interview on Israeli TV over the weekend, triggered hot responses from Palestinians and Israelis alike.

#CHILDREN’S REFERENDUM: Fine Gael’s Director of Elections or the Children’s Referendum Campaign Leo Varadkar TD today moved to criticise the information being presented by those opposed to the Referendum. Varadkar said that he welcomed debate and discussion on the topic, but was growing concerned about “misinformation” that was being presented to the public on the issue.

#SHANE O’CONNOR: Two men arrested in connection with the stabbing of a 22-year-old outside his home in Dublin last week have been released without charge.

THINGS WE LOVED:

  • This video from Air New Zealand, for obvious – completely dorky – reasons.

by

A special mention goes to one extremely happy Bill Clinton, pictured today with a baby (emotions unknown) in the State Capitol Square, Concord, N.H.

THINGS WE SHARED:

  • The Guardian’s Miranda Sawyer asks if the amazing Raspberry Pi – a £25 programmable computer invented by British scientists – will encourage kids to learn code, or just end up on the hands of nerds…
  • Hallucinations: frightening problem or a gift from the gods? Your opinion is all down to your culture, says Oliver Sacks in the New York Times.
  • Have you ever wondered why sign language interpreters are so animated? Because facial and body movements are all part of grammar in this fascinating visual language, explains The Atlantic.
