Three in court over Galway crimes

The men are charged in relation to an attempted robbery and an aggravated burglary.

THREE MEN ARE due in court today over two separate robberies carried out in Galway earlier this week.

Two men in their 30s are expected at a special sitting of Loughrea District Court this morning in relation to an attempted robbery at a post office in Creggs, on the Roscommon border, on Monday afternoon.

A third man remains in custody as part of the ongoing investigation.

Separately, a man in his 20s is due to appear at the same sitting after 9.30am in relation to an aggravated burglary in Ballinasloe yesterday. The incident happened shortly before 2am at a house on Jubilee Street.

Gardaí say a man forced his way into the home of an 80-year-old man and assaulted him. The raider then brought the pensioner to a bank machine on Dunlo Street, where he attempted to force him to withdraw cash. A member of the public who happened to be passing, intervened and the attacker fled.

The elderly victim was taken to Portiuncula Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries. He has since been released.

Gardaí are asking anyone who was in the Jubilee Street or Dunlo Street areas of Ballinasloe between  2am and 3 am this morning, to contact them at Ballinasloe Garda Station on 090 9631890.
