GET READY FOR a whole lot of testosterone – Top Gun 2 looks like it’s finally on its way.
The original 1986 movie, a particularly beloved male fantasy, told the story of Lieutenant Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell (Tom Cruise) as he made his way through the trials, tribulations, and endless shower scenes of Fightertown USA, otherwise known as Top Gun, the training school for America’s finest fighter pilots.
This time around it seems that Maverick will be taking on military drones.
That shouldn’t be that much of a departure for him seeing as the bad guys in the original were never actually seen from behind their blacked out visors.
Producer David Ellison, CEO of Skydance Productions who are handling the sequel, told a group interview at a press day for the upcoming Terminator Genisys that “Top Gun definitely fits into the seminal movie of my childhood”.
“There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick,” Ellison said.
What he forgot to mention is that there is no Maverick without Goose, or at the very least Iceman. But we’re sure they’ve thought of that.
It seems that Cruise’s role, which was initially slated to be a cameo of sorts, is now significantly beefed up, to the extent that Maverick is set to have the starring role once more.
The movie is at the scriptwriting stage apparently, so don’t expect it to see the light of day for another two years minimum, but when it does appear it’ll be in both 3D and IMAX.
We’ll be waiting Tom.
