Government set to extend refugee protection for Ukrainians until March 2028

It follows a meeting of ministers from EU members on the issue.

THE GOVERNMENT IS gearing up to extend refugee protections for Ukrainians fleeing the country’s war, with no end to the fighting in sight.

Justice minister Jim O’Callaghan has told Cabinet that the protection framework may continue until March 2028.

This may be agreed at EU level and O’Callaghan has told government colleagues he plans to support any extension.

The protection was set to end in March 2027 but that timeline appears to be getting pushed out amid the continuing war.

O’Callaghan got fellow government ministers to note recent discussions at the EU’s Justice Home Affairs Council indicate that member states are open to prolonging the Temporary Protection for an extra year.
