52-year-old killed in single-car Mayo crash

A man in his 50s is killed when the car in which he was a passenger was involved in an accident; two others were not injured.

A 52-YEAR-OLD MAN has become the third person to die on the roads so far this year.

The man was one of three people travelling on the R335 road at Kilsallagh, around 4 miles outside Louisburgh in Co Mayo on the route to Westport.

The man was seriously injured in the accident and pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other occupants, a 23-year-old driver and a 19-year-old passenger, were not injured in the collision.

The road remains closed this morning for a forensic examination, and traffic diversions are in place.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to the accident – which occurred at around 12:35am – contact Castlebar Garda Station on (094) 9038200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 11 or any Garda station.

The year’s first road fatality occurred at Virginia, Co Cavan, when a 22-year-old man was killed at around 2am on Sunday morning. A woman in her late 60s died when her car hit a ditch in Co Wexford yesterday afternoon.
